Job Description

The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Engineer reports to the Site EHS Manager and is responsible for providing technical leadership and support with respect to matters impacting occupational safety and environmental health for the Ames locations.

Job Responsibilities

  • Developing, recommending, and implementing practical, functional approaches to resolve safety, and environmental health issues in support of location strategies for achieving customer satisfaction and regulatory/policy compliance
  • Providing advice and direction on safety and/or environmental health concerns; and works with employees at all organizational levels to affect corrective action and improvement strategies
  • Serving as adviser to leaders, shop floor teams and safety committees
  • Delivering EHS training on required regulatory, corporate and site-specific topics
  • Reviewing current and proposed regulations/corporate requirements and recommends appropriate program measures to ensure compliance
  • Leading the site to sustain EHS Management Systems (ISO 14001 / 45001), Coordinator to ensure continuous improvement and ongoing certification
  • Utilizing six-sigma tools and behavior-based safety strategies to guide injury prevention efforts
  • Facilitating root cause analyses of significant injuries and incidents
  • Conducting investigations into incidents involving safety, health and environmental risks and prepare appropriate written reports
  • Conducting internal safety health and/or environmental audits to verify compliance levels
  • Evaluating site safety, health and environmental systems, procedures and processes and implements changes to maximize effectiveness
  • Developing EHS policies/procedures/systems and ensures that requirements are effectively integrated into standard operating procedures
  • Establishing EHS plans and activities and providing technical guidance in the implementation of controls to minimize risks
  • Providing expertise during management of change phases of operational changes to ensure that sound EHS control methodologies are integrated in changes
  • Conducting process hazard risk assessments as warranted
  • Performing ergonomic assessments and providing technical guidance to employees to minimize risks associated with material handling, repetitive motion and workstation design
  • Reviewing new chemicals from an EHS perspective and ensuring appropriate controls are established prior to introduction into the workplace
  • Interfacing with regulatory agencies, as appropriate
  • Working with considerable freedom for independent action
  • Will have a substantial degree of decision-making authority relating to the safe operation of work processes that may have considerable impact on results
  • The Sr. EHS Engineer is expected to base actions and recommendations on sound health, safety and environmental principles and supporting data
  • Possesses the ability to effectively step in and lead in the absence of the site EHS Manager
  • Must be an effective communicator, change agent and influencer

Background & Skills

Required (basic) qualifications

  • Prefer professional certification in safety (CSP), industrial hygiene (CIH), environmental CHMM, or a demonstrated path toward certification / equivalent years of experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills preferred.
  • Work well as a team member and leader.
  • Strong project management skills and bias for delivering results.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, etc.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and influence others to achieve objectives.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and make recommendations.

 

Preferred qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in safety engineering/management, environmental engineering, industrial hygiene or related science.
  • 6+ years’ experience in health, safety, ergonomics, and environmental disciplines.
