Senior Power Electronics Engineer

Job Description

If so, you might be the Senior Power Electronics Engineer we are seeking for our Danfoss Drives division located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. In this very exciting role, you will prepare designs, specifications, analysis and recommendations for development of new products for our Medium Voltage Drives product line. This highly capable engineer will also be responsible for creating system and sub-system level specification and complete main component dimensioning and selections.

 

Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following. 

  • Prepare designs, specifications, analysis and recommendations for development of new products or components
  • Power electronics/main circuit specification, simulations and design
  • Participate in test and verification tasks as required
  • Product and sub-system BOM (Bill Of Materials) and change control in own design discipline, i.e. ECO (Engineering Change Order) processes in PDM (Product Data Management) tools
  • Prepare for or participate in design and component reviews
  • Interface with other functional teams for development and product release
  • Support and give technical advice and assistance to other product development personnel regarding designs, material specifications, information sources and testing procedures

 

​​​Key tasks:  

  • System and sub-system level specification & main component dimensioning & selections
  • Electrical and power electronics schematics design
  • Electrical and power electronics circuitry design, analysis and verification
  • Creating and maintaining documentation - specifications, simulations and designs, including reviews
  • Serve as Lead Engineer in selected design disciplines and/or areas
  • Oversee the operations involved in the development, building and testing of prototype products

Background & Skills

The ideal candidate possesses these skills. 

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or Power Electronics, Master's degree is strongly preferred
  • Minimum 7 years of experience with research and development for AC Drives and/or frequency converters, 3 years experience with Master's degree
  • Knowledge of the following: IGBT/Power semiconductors, Power topologies, Analog Design/Control electronics, and Magnetics/Filters
  • Working knowledge on electrical safety standards e.g. NFPA 70E
  • Working knowledge of Computer aided engineering design and simulation tools, such as MatLab, MathCad and PSpice
  • Demonstrated initiative toward a practical approach to design tasks and ability to build demonstrators, quick prototypes/proof of concepts

 
Important Experience and Aspects Preferred:   

  • Experience with medium voltage (>1000 V) product development
  • Familiarity using various test instruments, such as oscilloscopes etc.
  • Familiarity with PCB design software, preferably OrCAD/Cadence, is a plus
  • Knowledgeable and well informed on new developments in research and engineering fields
  • Team player and Strong analytical and technical skills
