Product Development Engineer

Job Description

The product development engineer designs and develops hydraulic cartridge valves, components and system solutions that meet customer performance expectations. The product development engineer also supports Danfoss business initiatives by completing projects using the necessary design and planning tools to ensure quality, delivery and cost expectations are met.

Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following. 

  • Performs the following:
    • Designs new products with existing or new technology
    • Improves functional capabilities of existing products
    • Solves functional, application or production problems
    • Reduces product cost and improves product quality
  • Works with Purchasing, Quality and Manufacturing to meet quality and cost targets for current production products.
  • Works with Sales and Marketing to identify and provide solutions for new opportunities.
  • Completes product design layouts and detailed product documentation.
  • Modifies and creates drawings, test procedures and bill of materials.
  • Solves problems using 8-D, Design of Experiments and/or other methodologies.
  • Organizes and prioritizes assignments to ensure projects are completed on schedule.
  • Demonstrates flexibility, responds positively and supports changes in procedures, processes, responsibility and assignments.
  • Maintains cooperative and productive working relationships and communications with all   departments and employees.

Background & Skills

The ideal candidate possesses these skills. 

  • Bachelor Degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Agricultural Engineering required
  • A minimum of 5 years of related experience in product engineering developing mechanical components (cartridge valves/fluid power products is preferred).
  • Must be able to understand and apply engineering principles, education, and applicable technology.
  • Must be able to perform engineering calculations related to fluid dynamics and spring design.
  • The candidate must be able to work in a team atmosphere and possess strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The candidate must be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously, be self motivated, and eager to learn about and take over new responsibilities.
  • Knowledge/experience with computer aid design, preferable in NX Unigraphics or other parametric, feature based design software.
  • Knowledge/experience with machining processes; milling, turning, honing.
  • Knowledge/experience with materials including steel, aluminum, elastomers.
  • Experience in statistical problem solving (a plus).
  • Magnetic and electromagnetic experience (a plus).
