Danfoss Scotland has an exciting opportunity for an Embedded Systems Engineer to join our multi-disciplinary Digital Displacement® Research and Development team. This role will involve embedded systems development including embedded software, FPGA firmware and electronic hardware. There will be a focus on early-stage development for some of our newest products and technologies. You will work in a small, creative, and highly collaborative team where every day has new challenges and opportunities. Full training will be provided and you can expect to learn something new every day.

The embedded software runs on a microcontroller and is at the core of our innovative digital hydraulic technology. The technology cuts CO₂ emissions by improving energy efficiency. It also brings benefits of fast-acting direct digital control. Applications include mobile equipment and industrial machinery.

We are looking for a self-propelled individual who can contribute to all aspects of a task from understanding requirements, planning, implementation to bench testing and laboratory testing (on some of our high-power test rigs). You will help us to meet the challenge of producing high-performance, reliable software while remaining flexible for innovative research and development projects.

 

Job Responsibilities

Typical tasks will include helping to specify, develop and test real-time embedded C/C++ software features for Digital Displacement pumps in a wide range of applications where saving energy is important. This will involve collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders, including code reviews by team members. You will also contribute to development of internal C# utilities. Ideally you will have some knowledge of VHDL and Xilinx FPGAs. There is an opportunity to get involved in schematics and PCB design for control units and testing systems. You will use version control to keep your data organised and will produce concise documentation of your work.

Full on the job training will be given in this exciting new technology and a high level of responsibility is to be expected at an early stage. The job will appeal to outstanding embedded systems engineers who relish the idea of becoming members of an innovative software and electronic design team.

Background & Skills

Required skills and experience

  • Degree in Electronic Engineering, Embedded Software or similar.
  • 2-5 years’ experience but exceptional candidates with less experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience of developing for microcontrollers in C++ and C.
  • Some experience with version control systems such as Subversion or git.
  • Excellent organisational & time management skills.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work closely with different disciplines (mechanical, simulation, software, and hardware) to produce practical systems.
     

Desirable skills and experience

  • Experience using multimeters, oscilloscopes etc.
  • ARM 32-bit microcontroller programming.
  • Real-time operating system software development and debugging.
  • Understanding of software testing methods.
  • Firmware development in VHDL using Xilinx tools.
  • Good analogue and digital circuit knowledge.
  • Experience of PCB design.
     

We are looking for a hybrid combination. Encompassing a balanced capability with emotional intelligence. Possessing analytical skills and a systematic approach will be a distinct advantage, as being able to synthesize and deconstruct down complex problems into its components is required, hence having a high aptitude and ability level is preferable. 

You use your excellent analytical mindset, being able to see individual tasks in the bigger picture with your holistic view. On the other hand, we do also need a person who has an inbuilt natural curiosity on top of a detail orientated mind with the capability to use your communication skills to clarify business related topics to a broad variety of stakeholders. You can work in a fast-paced environment, were challenging stakeholders, shining a light on the essence of your findings in relation to managing project and change management processes efficiently is key.

Furthermore, you are an energetic and positive team player who can interact and work independent and agile with a notion of transparency and urgency when necessary.
