Job Description

The Senior Designer is an expert in product design and is able to work collaboratively and independently to develop and create product (and sometimes process) designs.  The Senior Designer prepares and maintains detailed mechanical 3D CAD part and assembly models and 2D engineering drawings utilizing the proper standards and tolerance dimensions for the manufacture of a variety of mechanical, hydraulic, and/or electrical components and assemblies.  The Senior Designer prepares and maintains engineering Bills of Materials and associated configuration requirements in the CAD and business systems.  Assignments involve creating new designs and modifying current designs for products, tools, and fixtures as well as creating and updating design and drafting standards and specifications.

Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
•    Demonstrate a commitment to maintain a safe, clean, and orderly work area.  Follow safety regulations and actively contribute to work safety.
•    Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
•    Investigate and research design requests and coordinate activities with in-house organizations, outside vendors, and external customers, as applicable, to develop the most feasible design to meet the required objectives. 
•    Actively participate in DFM&A (Design For Manufacturing & Assembly) discussions. 
•    Work collaboratively in a team environment (in person and virtual/phone conferencing).
•    Create new product designs and modify existing product designs, and as such: 
•    Consider space, weight, cost, reliability, and other essential considerations and limitations.
•    Apply tolerancing schemes using GD&T methods.
•    Utilize tolerance stack-up tools to determine correct allocation of tolerances to ensure proper fits, clearances, and performance.
•    Prepare appropriate data including 3D models (part and assembly), 2D drawings, and Bills of Material (Production and Service).
•    Understand the difference between several different drawing types (customer appropriate outline/installation drawings, exploded service drawings, production part drawings, process drawings, sketch/layout drawings, etc.) and how different specifications apply to each.
•    Maintain and process Engineering Changes for existing products.
•    Check drawings that are prepared or revised by other personnel to ensure that all design specifications and requirements are met.
•    Assist and train designers and drafters in design work and related duties. 
•    Maintain complete familiarity with current design practices including company and industry specifications, standards, and procedures.
•    Create and update design and drafting standards and specifications.
•    Work to improve professional skills and knowledge through individual investigation, education and training, and attendance of seminars.
•    Promote quality and continuous improvement philosophy.
•    Evaluate situations objectively and demonstrate the ability to make timely decisions that are intended to have a positive effect on work performance. 
•    Organize and prioritize work assignments to complete assignments/tasks on time, with quality, and anticipate problem areas.
•    Apply creative approaches to solve problems maximizing effective use of appropriate resources. 
•    Demonstrate flexibility in approach and ideas, respond positively and support changes in procedures, process, technology, responsibility, and assignments.

Background & Skills

The ideal candidate possesses: 
•    AAS degree in CAD Technology or equivalent from 2-year college or technical school
•    Four or more years of Mechanical Design experience in industry, or equivalent combination of education and experience
•    Proficiency in 3D and 2D Mechanical CAD, UGNX Preferred
•    Experience with complex design layouts and stack-ups
•    Ability to interpret and apply Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing
•    Proficiency in trigonometry and plane & solid geometry
•    Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference
•    Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
•    Basic ability to interpret simple FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) reports
•    Understanding of common part manufacturing methods including casting, stamping, CNC and other machining, and additive manufacturing
•    Understanding of common assembly manufacturing methods
•    Basic skills in Microsoft 365 applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
•    Experience with Teamcenter, SAP, and Salesforce (or similar Product Lifecycle and Business Management Software)
•    Self-motivation and curiosity with strong organizational skills and attention to detail
•    A customer focused mentality and superior communication skills
•    Analytical skills and confidence to be able to make decisions
•    Ability to travel domestically and internationally
•    Ability to work from home in a productive manner if required.
