Work Environment and Physical Activity
Environment
The extruder is a very large machine and the entire process is very long/spread out.
There are a lot of reels in this area.
Minimal fork lift traffic (fork lifts usually just drop off/pick up materials on the edge of extruder workspace).
Workspace is very loud hot.
Safety
Risk of burns: extruder, extruder head, and rubber coming from extruder head are all very hot. Gloves with long cuffs are required.
Slight slipping risk: calzin and water processes drip occasionally. Area must be kept clean; use caution.
Mild risk of irritation from calzin.
Fumes from heated rubber pose risk of airway irritation and occasional coughing. (Some compounds are far more potent than others.)
Safety glasses, ear plugs, and steel-toed shoes required at all times.
Gloves required when moving reels, handling knives.
Physical Activity
Entire shift is spent walking or standing.
Heavy lifting: carrying rubber to scrap (35-50 lbs), pushing reels, lifting and moving die retainer.
Pulling rubber out of extruder head - does not qualify as heavy lifting but does require strength.
Ability to reach, grasp and manipulate.
